SELF-GUIDED QR TOUR: HOTEL DESIGN

Guestrooms

Inspired by Seattle's natural landscape and the city’s creative and contemporary energy, Designer Philippe Starck incorporated a warm color palette, mixed use of materials, wood and marble furniture accents, live-edge stone accents, mirrors, and mid-century modern furniture in the design of the guestrooms, complete with a spacious bathroom with travertine stone cloaked surfaces – ultimately creating a starkly contrasting juxtaposition with the bedroom space. The designer encourages guests to look at things in a different way as they move throughout the space, even within the same room.

Philippe Starck also intended to exploit differences in what people may find as comfortable and for guests to see their day-to-day social norms in a fresh perspective, urging guests to let go of their expectations and embrace the experience.

Examples include:

  • In select rooms, windows are placed above sink bathrooms where you would expect a mirror and bathroom doors are made of mirrors.
  • Dark orange hallways and snug corridors feel private and are in stark contrast to the bright, spacious guest rooms, adding a dramatic feeling upon entering.
  • Mirrors are a Starck fixture, self-image being something he is quite cognizant of, a reflection of yourself and your character. Full-length arch mirrors present an unexpected place to get ready, do makeup, and reflect.
  • Contrast is created for dramatic effect through the bathroom’s marble and travertine design and the bed’s warm tones and wooden materials.

Rather than creating one intentional experience, Philippe Starck’s design leaves the discovery open to the guest’s personal interpretation.
